Conteúdo do artigo principal
Resumo
The objective of this of this study was identify/assess the motivations for following each way of eating (VEG and ONM) and the main difficulties in following vegetarianism among Brazilian men. The study was carried out with 44 male vegetarians (VEG) and 42 omnivores (ONI), between 35 and 71 years of age, using a 24-hour food recall, triple session of physical activity, and incidents of anxiety and depression. As a result, the motivations for being VEG were ecological and animal welfare in nature. The factors mentioned that make it difficult to maintain a vegetarian diet were related to the availability and accessibility of prepared vegetarian meals, specific products and factors such as the social and family environment. The main factor that motivated the consumption of meat for the ONI group was the pleasure associated with the taste of meat, the belief that meat is necessary in a healthy diet and the acceptance of family and cultural practices. The ONI group scored higher on the anxiety and depression scales than the VEG group. This is the first Brazilian study that considered motivational, social and emotional aspects of vegetarianism in adult men.
